Experience Special Guided Walks around Windsor and Eton with Anne Bartlett, Blue Badge Tour Guide

Windsor:  I recommend a guided walk around this historic riverside town that grew up around the castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest royal residence to have remained in continuous occupation by the Kings and Queens of England.  The first houses were built around the castle walls and, as the castle increased in importance, so did the town. There are many fine 17th century buildings and Georgian town houses, there are statues and interesting wall plaques to discover on the tour and its also where you will find the shortest street in Britain.

The Changing of the Guards is a great sight and a highlight of a day spent in Windsor.  The Guards march through the town from the barracks and up to the castle accompanied by a military band. There are five different regiments that take part, The Grenadier Guards, The Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Welsh Guards.  About fifteen minutes after the march to the castle, the old Guard that have finished duties, return to barracks by the same route accompanied by music.

Among the many historic buildings is The Guildhall, built by Sir Christopher Wren.  This is where Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles had their Civil Wedding Ceremony on 9th April 2005.  It was also where the first Gay Marriage took place, and that was between Elton John and his partner David Furnish.

Enjoy a guided walk with me, looking at the fascinating buildings in the town and find out more about the people, the history and heritage of this fascinating place.

Other places we can visit:

Savill Gardens, Windsor Great Park: 35 acres of beautiful ornamental gardens begun in the 1930's by Sir Eric Savill.

Runnymede:  King John sealed the Magna Carta here in 1215.  The American Constitution is based on the Magna Carta and there is a memorial on the hillside erected by the American Bar Association in 1957.  Also a memorial to the memory of the assasinated American President - John F. Kennedy, on land given by the Queen.  As well as an Air Forces memorial to "the men and women of the Air Forces of The British Commonwealth who lost their lives during the Second World War and who have no known grave."
