Enjoy special guided coach tours in and around Stratford-Upon-Avon with Anne Bartlett, a registered Blue Badge Tour Guide.
Stratford-upon-Avon: Is one of the most important tourist destinations in the U.K. It is where England's greatest playwright and poet William Shakespeare was born, where he grew up and where he died. There are many places around Stratford connected with Shakespeare. For example, there's his birthplace and museum to visit, also the house where his mother, Mary Arden, lived, as well as the cottage where Anne Hathaway, who became his wife, spent her childhood.
The Shakespeare Properties to see and enjoy:-
-
Shakespeare's Birthplace:
This is definitely well worth a visit. The entrance to the house starts with a visit to an exhibition about Shakespeare's life. The birthplace itself is entered via a beautiful and well tended garden containing many trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs mentioned in Shakespeare's plays. The rooms of the birthplace are laid out and furnished as they would have been in Elizabethan times and all restoration work has been as careful and as accurate as researchers have been able to discover from historic documents and illustrations.
-
New Place and Nash's House:
These are right in the centre of Stratford and are passed on a town walk. New Place was Shakespeare's retirement home. There is a sad but fascinating story to be heard here. Nash's house was owned by Thomas Nash, the first husband of Elizabeth, Shakespeare's grandaughter. It is now a local history museum.
-
Hall's Croft:
This house is a short distance from The Birthplace and is where Shakespeare's daughter lived with her husband Dr John Hall. Inside there is an exhibition about Dr Hall and his medical practice along with instruments and items connected with his profession. The furniture, furnishings and pictures are contemorary with the 16th and 17th century.
-
Anne Hathaway's Cottage:
A lovely thatched cottage situated in the nearby village of Shottery. This is where Anne Hathaway's family lived and where Shakespeare came "a courting." Hathaway descendents lived in the house until 1892 when the Trust bought the property along with the furniture and furnishing. Again the house has been restored to its original character.
-
Mary Arden's House:
Part of a Tudor farmstead in the attractive village of Wilmcote where Mary grew up as the youngest of 8 children. There's lots to see. Apart from the farmhouse, there are exhibitions in various outbuildings and everything combines to be a fascinating museum showing rural life around 400 years ago.
